1996 Poland/Israel Study
Mission -- Itinerary

The Holocaust/Genocide Project is pleased to provide the itinerary for the 1996 Poland/Israel Study Mission. The trip, as with the trips in previous years, was presented by the ORT High School in Kiryat Motzkin, Israel. Each year, participants praise the combination and the hospitality provided by the Israeli hosts.

The 1996 Poland/Israel study mission was a great success. Early in 1997, we will provide detailed travel information for the 1997 Poland/Israel study mission. If you have any questions about the HGP's annual trip, please let us know.

POLAND

• Arrival in Warsaw (Warszawa), capital and cultural center of Poland.
• Visit Lazienki Botanical Gardens (once the summer home of the Polish king Stanislaw August Poniatowski).

• Visit Nozyk synagogue (founded in 1902 by Zalman Nozyk).
• Visit Umschlagplatz (deportation square); Mila 18 (Warsaw Ghetto Uprising headquarters); and, Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Monument by Natan Rapaport (erected in 1948).
• Visit the Warsaw Jewish Cemetery (established in 1799); Janusz Korczak Orphanage (designed in 1912); and, Old Town (Stare Miasto) of Warsaw.

• Visit the Tykocin (Tiktin) synagogue (established in 1642); and Treblinka extermination camp site.
• Transfer to Lublin. Tour of the city of Lublin.

• Visit Lublin Market.
• Visit the Majdanek extermination camp site.
• Transfer to Krakow.

• Visit Kazimierz, the Jewish quarter of Krakow (synagogues, museums, and Jewish cemetery).
• Visit the Pankewicz Pharmacy (ghetto headquarters); Krakow Ghetto wall remnants; city square and cloth market; and, Wawel Palace.
• Visit the Plaszow concentration camp site (which is depicted in the film, Schindler's List).

• Visit the Wieliczka salt mines (Poland's oldest working mines).
• Visit the Zakopane ski resort in the Tatra Mountains.

• Visit the Auschwitz and Birkenau (Auschwitz II) extermination camp sites near Oswiecim.

CZECH REPUBLIC

• Transfer to Brno, Czech Republic.
• Tour the Fossil Caves (en route to Brno).
  

• Transfer to Prague.
• Visit city sights.

• Tour the Theresienstadt (Terezín) extermination camp site.
• Sightseeing in Prague.

• All day in Prague.
• Afternoon: Transfer to airport; flight to Tel Aviv, Israel.

ISRAEL

• All day in Tel Aviv.
  

• Visit Caesaria National Park (ancient Roman city excavation).
• Visit the Druze villages on Mt. Carmel.
• Arrive in Kiryat Motzkin.

• Visit Galilee and the Golan Heights (including Nazareth and Lake Tiberias).
• Visit the Israel-Lebanon border ("the good fence"); Jordan River; and, Golan Heights Winery).

• Passover Eve (Passover Seder with host family).
  

• With host family.
  

• Drive to Jerusalem.
• Visit old and new city of Jerusalem.

• Visit Masada National Park and the Dead Sea.
  

ACCOMMODATIONS

In Europe: Participants stay in four- or five-star hotels, or the equivalent. Meals: Breakfast and dinner are always included. Lunch is either packed or bought en route.

In Israel: With host family in Kiryat Motzkin or modest accommodations.

COSTS

Flights: Rates vary, depending on the place of origin. Please contact Gideon Goldstein <ortisrael@igc.apc.org> for details.

Other Expenses: For the European portion of the trip, the cost for 1996 was approximately US$60.00 per day, except tips and purchased lunches. The approximate cost for the portion of the trip spent in Israel was US$150.

Names of hotels are provided well in advance of each annual trip, along with addresses and phone numbers.

Visas: Please inquire in your country of origin to determine whether or not you need a visa to Poland or the Czech Republic.
